Santa Elena is one of Medellín’s five corregimientos (townships), located just 17 kilometers from the city center. Known as the birthplace of the silletera tradition, this destination offers a unique combination of culture, nature, and outdoor activities.

Perfect for a weekend getaway, this small corregimiento allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of its mountainous landscapes and the warmth of its people.

History

Santa Elena has a history deeply tied to the silletera tradition, a custom dating back over 150 years. Silleteros are farmers who create and transport elaborate floral arrangements on silletas (large wooden frames carried on their backs), a practice that originated as a way to carry flowers and other products to market.

Every year, during Medellín’s Feria de las Flores (Flower Fair), this tradition is celebrated, and the silleteros of Santa Elena become the stars of the event, showcasing their impressive floral creations in the Desfile de Silleteros (Silleteros Parade).

One of the most authentic experiences in Santa Elena is visiting a silletera farm.
